MapMax combines the map with an optional location list, search, filters, markers, and popups. Configure these parts together so selecting a location produces the same clear result on desktop and mobile.

Choose a sidebar mode

  • Hidden: show only the map and markers.

  • Left or right: keep a vertical location list beside the map.

  • Bottom: show horizontal location cards below the map.

Set an appropriate sidebar width and background for the left or right layouts. With longer descriptions, allow enough room for the card or popup content without covering most of the map.

Enable search and sorting

Search lets visitors find and focus a location by name. Sort the list in ascending or descending order when a predictable sequence is useful. Location names should be distinct enough to make the results understandable.

Configure filters

MapMax 1.5 adds a dropdown-based filter system across sidebar layouts. Use consistent filter values in every data source, and keep the number of choices manageable. Test the unfiltered view as well as every individual option.

Choose markers and clustering

Select one of the built-in marker styles or use a custom SVG marker. Data-driven locations can use different marker icons when their source is configured accordingly. Clustering groups nearby markers and improves navigation and performance with larger datasets.

Control focus and the initial view

When a visitor selects a sidebar entry or marker, MapMax focuses the map and opens the corresponding location. Use the option to show all pins for the initial view, and adjust visual padding so edge markers are not clipped. Enable Popup Focus Offset when the selected popup needs more space above or beside the focused marker.

Design the popup and cards

Locations can display text, an image, a URL action, and a route action. Images can be shown in the sidebar, popup, or both. Keep descriptions concise; MapMax can handle longer content and optional scrolling, but the primary location information should remain immediately visible.

Configure route and information buttons

The information button opens the location URL when one is supplied. The route button can hand the destination to Google Maps or Apple Maps. Hide buttons that have no valid destination and test external links on both desktop and mobile devices.

Mobile checklist

  • Confirm that the map has a useful height.

  • Open and close the sidebar controls.

  • Test clustered markers and long popups.

  • Make sure cards, images, and buttons do not obscure the active marker.

  • Verify search and every filter option.
